The term shawl is derived from
the Persian word "Shal", which means a clothing that is
loosely worn around a person. Shawls are mainly worn to give a warm
feeling, to complement a costume; and for symbolic reasons. They also
serve as a fashion accessory. Shawls are also worn for offering prayers
in many religions. Shawls had been a fashion statement amongst ladies
since time immemorial. They were equally a choice of gents in ancient
India.
Shawls are produced from various raw materials, but pre-dominant amongst all is wool. Shawls are available in various designs, styles and patterns. They also gain significance on the basis of their place of origin. Of all the varieties, Pashmina shawls, woven from very fine, soft and flossy wool called "pashm" or pashmina are very popular worldwide. This wool is extracted from the shawl-goat, a variety of Capra hircus, which is mostly found in the hilly regions of Tibet. These shawls are widely produced in Kashmir in India and in Nepal. |
