West
Bengal Kantha Shawls
Kantha shawls are exclusively
made in West Bengal in India. These are intricately embroidered shawls
featuring various geometrical and traditional patterns. Kantha
embroidery is a fine needlework tradition of West Bengal, which gives a
rich sensuous look to shawls. Kantha embroidery can be done on woolen,
cotton and silk shawls as well.
Actually the Kantha stitch is
simple running stitch. The way in which the stitch has been used makes
the shawl extra ordinary. While making shawls, the cloth is given layers
that are kept together by the stitches. These shawls were earlier made
in Bengal to protect people from severe cold.
Design & Pattern:
Nakshi kantha is a prominent design among kantha shawls stitched in
Bengal. The nakshi kantha shawls are an expression of culture and
tradition and are now being considered as a form of art. The designs of
geometric, symmetrical kantha came from the traditional art of alpanas,
which are ritualistic drawings made on the floors to signify worship or
celebration. Narrative scenes showing folk images and current events are
also embroidered on shawls. Kantha embroidery is considered to be a
quilt stitch denoting piled patch work.
Kantha embroidered shawls are known for their unique color combination
and patterns. These stitches mainly denoted everyday objects like
flowers, vegetables, fish forms, etc. The kantha craft is designed
entirely of tiny running stitch in different colours. Shawls having
kantha stitch is widely popular and is known for their intricate designs
and color combinations.
