A long shawl is a shawl that has
a fully woven rectangular centre with a repeated pattern. Also known as
purmatan, a long shawl or shoulder mantle is a special type of shawl
woven on wool. The term "purmatan" refers to a shawl that has
a completely woven rectangular centre designed with a repeated pattern.
Shawls with plain unwoven centres are called palledar.
Long shawls have a finely woven design with eleven rows of botehs, five
rows facing one palla (end-panel) and the other six rows facing the
opposite end. Shawls with plain unwoven centres are called palledar.
Long shawls dates back to Afghan period in India. They are now produced
in Kashmir.
