Geometric
Pattern of Shawls
Patterns created with straight
lines are called geometric. Their designs are created mostly with right
angles, diagonals, triangles, and other geometric shapes. Geometric
patterns can have either simple or very complex motifs. Usually Persian
shawls with geometric patterns are very intricate. Baluchi, Turkoman,
Turkish and Caucasian styles are good representations of the geometric
pattern.
Geometric patterns are mostly
found in Islamic art. Geometric patterns can be used to make one of the
three nonfigural types of decoration in shawls, which also include
calligraphy and vegetal patterns. Geometric patterns are abstract
designs that adorn the shawls and garments. Consisting of and generated
from simple forms like circle, square, etc, geometric patterns were
combined, interlaced, duplicated and arranged in intricate combinations
to produce excellent designs.
Geometric patterns are mainly constructed from four basic shapes also
called repeat units. From these shapes, the more complicated patterns
like circles and interlaced circles; squares or four-sided polygons; the
ubiquitous star pattern, ultimately derived from squares and triangles
inscribed in a circle; and multisided polygons; are constructed.
