The term shawl is derived from
Persian word "Shal", meaning a garment to be wrapped around a
person. Shawls had been a fashion statement amongst women since time
immemorial. They are basically designed to impart a feeling of warmth,
to complement a costume and for symbolic reasons. They can also be used
for added warmth and fashion at outdoor or indoor evening affairs.
Shawls are used in various forms and known by various names in
different parts of the world. In some cultures, they are used as
national folk dress. It is due to this fact that shawls had been
extensively used in the ancient times. Shawls are also worn as a dance
dress in various European countries and also during prayers in various
religions. These fashion accessories come in various designs and

Shawls are manufactured in
various parts of the world, but India is known for its age old tradition
of shawl weaving. The global shawl industry has experienced several ups

Presently, India and China are considered to be the leading
manufacturers and suppliers of shawls of various types to different
countries of the world. Russia also plays an increasingly important role

Bolivia are also known for producing high quality designer shawls.
In India, Kashmir occupies a pre-eminent place in manufacturing fine
quality pashmina shawls, woven from very soft, fine, short and flossy
wool called pashm or pashmina. The Kashmir shawl is featured by the
elaboration of its design, brilliant craftsmanship, the glowing harmony,
depth and enduring qualities of its colours. Few places in Punjab in
India are also known for producing good quality shawls.
